“Yarn of Flame and Shadow” is our latest bookish colorway and it’s inspired by Sarah J Maas’s highly anticipated book, “House of Flame and Shadow.” This is book 3 in Maas’s Cresecent City series, and I have been dying for it since the whopper of a reveal that book 2 left us with back in 2022.! I highly recommend the series if you are a lover of fantasy and kick ass people.

Yarn of Flame and Shadow has so many deep intricate colors. Therefore, I’ve been working on the colorway since October! The book cover has this super dark outline color and I couldn’t tell if it was black, purple or blue from any of the screens I viewed it on. So, I went to my trusty print shop (Northern Copy Express, run and owned by women!) and had them print out a mock up of the cover. It turns out, the dark color is a little of everything so I created, what I’m calling, “tonal dark” by mixing a lot of black with royal purple and a touch of navy blue. It is such a lovely juicy color. Then, I had to figure out how to create the coppery orangey flame color. At first, I settled on a persimmon orange with a reddish brown but it was too orange, so I added a real vibrant fire engine red but something was missing. Eventually, I added gold to the mix and it gave me the perfect fire-y copper. BUT, I wasn’t done. There is a striking golden lady on the book cover too but I couldn’t just use gold. I needed to add a sandy tonal color for depth so I could blend the fire-y copper and then the gold and the “dark tonal.” Lastly, if you know me at all, you know I had to throw speckles all over it so I chose a lovely silvery grayish black speckle for dimension. Thus, Yarn of Flame and Shadow was born.

I collaborated with my local independent book store, McLean and Eakin and my knitwear designer friend, Karen Bradley who also happens to be a professional bookseller at M&E, to create a yarn and knit cowl pattern set. Karen designed the Flame & Shadow Twisted Cowl and it’s a free download on Ravelry to go with the colorway and the book! She knit it with our Like a Cloud base and it’s totally scrumptious. You can find the pattern here.

Below is the blurb for House of Flame and Shadow. You should totally give this a read (though start with the other 2 first!). You can find it at McLean and Eakin or wherever fine books are sold.

The stunning third book in the sexy, action-packed Crescent City series, following the global bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath.

Bryce Quinlan never expected to see a world other than Midgard, but now that she has, all she wants is to get back. Everything she loves is in Midgard: her family, her friends, her mate. Stranded in a strange new world, she's going to need all her wits about her to get home again. And that's no easy feat when she has no idea who to trust.

Hunt Athalar has found himself in some deep holes in his life, but this one might be the deepest of all. After a few brief months with everything he ever wanted, he's in the Asteri's dungeons again, stripped of his freedom and without a clue as to Bryce's fate. He's desperate to help her, but until he can escape the Asteri's leash, his hands are quite literally tied.

In this sexy, breathtaking sequel to the #1 bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath, Sarah J. Maas's Crescent City series reaches new heights as Bryce and Hunt's world is brought to the brink of collapse-with its future resting on their shoulders.

Yarn usually ships within 1 week. Dyed to order yarn may take up to 2 weeks.

The unique fiber blend makes a wonderfully textured and beautifully soft yarn, perfect for sweaters, socks, and all accessories. BRK Yak sock is not the typical white yarn base. The dark yak fiber blended with the creamy merino makes a richly toned color which adds great depth to the regular colorways. The bare color is a lovely gray-ish tan so any colorways dyed on this base will look a bit different than the same colorway dyed on a white yarn base. Refer to the photos in the shop to get an idea of how gorgeous this base truly is!
